Thunder Mountain Equestrian Trail

The Thunder Mountain Equestrian Trail is 26 miles long, and is located near the town of Benezette, in Elk County. There are several road crossings where the trail can be accessed and two loops for shorter trail rides.

Access - The Thunder Mountain Equestrian Trail begins at the Trail Head along the East Branch of the Hicks Run Road. This is approximately 3.75 miles north of PA Route 555. From DuBois take Rt. 255 east approximately 18.5 miles to Rt. 555, or from St. Marys take Rt. 255 south approximately 12 miles to Rt. 555. Follow Rt. 555 east approximately 18 miles to Hick's Run Rd. The trail head has sufficient room to park horse trailers and unload. This is a day use facility and overnight camping is not permitted.

Camping - Although camping at the Trail Head is not permitted, camping is permitted along the trail system. Camping permits must be acquired prior to your stay, and are issued free of charge at the Elk State Forest district office.

General Information

  • The trail is blazed in blue horseshoes.
  • You must pack in potable water.
  • There are no restrooms available. Keep privies at least 200 feet from water.
  • Please check the map, not all trails are open to horses.
  • Keep horses away from wet areas.
  • Keep horses away from trees when tied.
  • Motorized vehicles are prohibited
  • Camp at least 100 feet from any stream or water source.
  • No campfires are permitted when the wildfire danger is high.
  • Remember, leave only hoofprints. Pack out all trash.
