Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor
It's
where the journey is just as important as the destination, where
road warriors can experience nostalgic America at its best. It's
the Lincoln Highway—U.S. Route 30 through Pennsylvania—the
nation's first coast-to-coast highway stretching from New York City
to San Francisco! Just as the Lincoln Highway sparked the public's
imagination and fostered the rapid growth of automobile tourism
in the early 20th century, the 200-mile Lincoln Highway Heritage
Corridor beckons you to ride the same ribbon of asphalt and concrete
as your grandfather.
A
trip on the Highway becomes a passage in time and place as you discover
the many historic, cultural and recreational attractions that await
you along its course. Learn more about the three 18th century forts;
five state parks; mountainous topography of breathtaking beauty
and scenery; and the bigger-than-life Coffee Pot. Your countryside
travels will take you through a variety of quaint Pennsylvania towns—Ligonier,
Gettysburg, New Oxford, Chambersburg, Schellsburg, Bedford, and
McConnellsburg to name a few—where antiqueing and unique shopping
experiences take on an added dimension. Your journey takes you to
Chambersburg and the Old Jail, where basement dungeons were used
as a stop for the Underground Railroad. For Civil War buffs, the
road leads to Gettysburg and points beyond.
Getting there is half the fun when you can enjoy the many things
you would never see if you stayed on the interstate highways. That's
the beauty of a trip on the Lincoln Highway.
Heritage Park Description
US Route 30, through the six southern counties of Adams, Franklin,
Fulton, Bedford, Somerset and Westmoreland, is the focus of an effort
to preserve, enhance and promote the transportation heritage that
evolves around Pennsylvania's section of the first transcontinental
highway. The Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor installed 150 Lincoln
Highway signs along the Corridor; completed an Interpretive Plan,
and is in the process of implementing the 200-mile Roadside Museum
with interpretive exhibits and murals.
