Conservation Landscapes

Throughout the commonwealth, large regions are working together to drive strategic investment and actions around sustainability, conservation, community revitalization, and recreational projects.

Local Parks

Being well, having fun, and strengthening our communities are some of the ways that local parks and recreation enhance the lives of all Pennsylvanians.

Planting Trees

Responding to an alarming trend of the loss of trees in Pennsylvania’s metropolitan areas, TreeVitalize is a public-private partnership to help restore tree cover, educate citizens about planting trees as an act of caring for our environment, and build capacity among local governments to understand, protect and restore their urban trees.

Get Outdoors PA

Get Outdoors PA strives to connect citizens with outdoor recreation activities to increase their appreciation and active use of parks, forests and public spaces while imparting a message of environmental stewardship and healthy living.

Pa. Outdoor Recreation Plan

Every five years, states across the nation are required to produce a new statewide recreation plan to remain eligible to receive federal Land and Water Conservation funds. The plan guides outdoor recreation programs, policies and projects.

Pennsylvania and its many partners will develop an outstanding network of greenways across the Commonwealth, creating an asset highly valued by Pennsylvanians and enhancing the quality of life for all.

Land Conservation

Over a century ago conservation leaders envisioned a future for Pennsylvania that was defined by its natural beauty and had the foresight to set aside land for public enjoyment. How leaders today conserve and sustain the Commonwealth’s natural resources and protect the landscape, is the most important legacy we can pass on to future generations. What we do today will determine the future prosperity and quality of life for the citizens of tomorrow.

Sustainable Land Practices

The built landscape can be designed and maintained in an environmentally-friendly manner, while also saving money and time.  Sustainable lands are those that balance the needs of people and communities with natural resource protection.  Learn more about green and sustainable landscapes through the resources on this site.

Green and Sustainable Locals Parks

The DCNR Bureau of Recreation and Conservation is a strong proponent of green/sustainable parks, trails, recreation facilities and conservation areas.

Rivers Conservation

The Pa. Rivers Conservation Program has been developed to conserve and enhance river resources through preparation and accomplishment of locally initiated plans.  The program provides technical and financial assistance to municipalities and river support groups to carry out planning, implementation, acquisition and development activities. A registry is established to recognize local river conservation efforts. Six components are used to carry out these functions.

Heritage Areas

HeritagePA is a resource network for Pennsylvania’s officially-designated state and national Heritage Areas. It is dedicated to advancing the heritage development movement in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the United States.

Wildfire Prevention

DCNR Bureau of Forestry is responsible for protecting the Commonwealth's 17 million acres of public and private wildlands from damage by wildfire. This is accomplished by a combination of wildfire prevention, preparedness, suppression and investigation. The bureau works with fire wardens and volunteer fire departments to promote the latest advances in fire prevention and suppression.
