Aerial Survey Effort Results for Arnot, Tioga State Forest
Habitat Condition: Very Poor The image below is an infrared aerial photograph of the landscape, with the deer survey data superimposed on top of it. It is not the imagery obtained from the survey flights. The deer survey flight footage was interpreted, the deer locations were plotted, and the results were added to the image below, along with state forest and flight area boundaries. Click the image below for a larger picture Winter deer distribution on this area appears to be concentrated in response to one of three variables: feeding by humans, proximity to wetland habitats, and proximity to recent timber harvests. The influence of feeding is evidenced by the concentrations of deer around the private housing developments within the survey area. The areas where deer concentrated are interspersed with large areas of low or no deer sightings. Subsequent analysis of the deer observations compared to the browsing survey plot data will help to evaluate whether or not these observations are representative of deer distributions throughout the winter.
