State Parks
Promised Land State Park Promised Land State Park was named by a religious group know as the "Shakers," who originally settled this region. Within the park are two lakes, the 420 acre Promised Land Lake and the smaller 170 acre Lower Lake. The Promised Land Lake area provides swimming, fishing and boating. A sand beach and a bathhouse are located within the picnic area. A snack bar, boat rental, public boat mooring and launching, and three large campgrounds are available. A primitive campground is open year round. A guide describing the various seasonal trail opportunities is available at the park office. The Lower Lake area provides fishing, boating, a public boat mooring area, boat launching ramp and a fourth tent and trailer camping area. There are also 12 rustic family cabins in the Bear Wallow Cabin Colony, which were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps and are available for rent nightly or weekly, from spring through fall. Big Pocono State Park Big Pocono State Park consists of 1,300 acres atop Camelback Mountain. Within this park are 10 miles of hiking and equestrian trails, scenic views, and picnic areas with grills. Big Pocono Fire Tower, operated by the Bureau of Forestry, is a Registered National Historic Fire Tower located in the park and is the oldest steel fire tower still in use. The Catskill Mountains of New York, about 80 miles to the northeast, the East High Point Mountains in New Jersey, and the Delaware Water Gap can be seen from the summit parking area. Winter access is not permitted. Visitors should contact the Tobyhanna State Park office for information on early spring and early winter road conditions. Gouldsboro State Park Gouldsboro State Park is located west of and adjacent to Tobyhanna State Park. The 2,800 acres of park land includes a 250-acre lake and 54 acres of land under the jurisdiction of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. A swimming beach, boat rental concession, picnic areas, bicycle and hiking trails, and warm water fishing are available. Tobyhanna State Park Tobyhanna State Park consists of 5,400 acres and includes a 170-acres lake. A family campground contains 140 campsites that can accommodate any camper equipment from the smallest tent to the largest motor home. A swimming beach, picnic areas, and a boat rental concession are available. Hiking, bicycling, hunting, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling are permitted.
