Sikora Bros. Paving, Inc. will be removing the large metal culvert and installing a pre-cast concrete box culvert. Work will begin the 3rd or 4th week in September and continue until the 3rd or 4th week in October. Little Bear Creek State Forest Road will be CLOSED to THRU TRAFFIC at the construction site until the project is completed. Periodic heavy truck traffic will be present on both sides of the construction site. The Camp Conley Camping Area on Sand Spring road will be accessible from the east via Fire Tower road and Little Bear Creek road. The Loyalsock Trail Trailhead will be accessible from Route 87. Rock Run Road (Sullivan Co.) - The historic iron through-truss bridge on Rock Run Road over the Loyalsock Creek in the Loyalsock State Forest is closed for an undetermined amount of time. Lycoming Supply was contracted to perform remediation work on the bridge abutments and to replace the aged wooden decking in October of 2015. Upon removing the old wooden deck, it was found that there was an unsatisfactory amount of deterioration on some critical bridge components that was not discovered during the most recent inspection. Being an historic bridge, there are limitations on what types of repairs can be made in order to ensure its historical integrity. Lycoming Supply and the DCNR Bureau of Facilities Design and Construction are working on some solutions to the problem. Upon approval, the repairs will continue. Forest users will need to access that portion of the Loyalsock State Forest from PA Route 87 and Rock Run Road (Forks Township) or from PA Route 154 and Loyalsock Road, just west of Worlds End State Park. For more information please contact the Loyalsock State Forest Resource Management Center at 570-946-4049.
Unplanned road closures for maintenance activities and weather emergencies can occur throughout the year, so calling in advance of your visit to the Loyalsock State Forest is always a good idea. Other road maintenance projects which don’t require a road closure, also occur throughout the year. For your safety and the safety of our workers, please observe and obey traffic signage.
Don't Move Firewood
To help protect the forest from invasive insects that can kill trees and devastate the ecosystem, please do not transport firewood over long distances. Firewood can harbor insects such as emerald ash borer. Cut or purchase your firewood where you intend to burn it.
