The Director of the Bureau of Information Technology is responsible for insuring that the technological needs of the internal and external customers of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources are met. The primary goal of the Bureau is to utilize current technologies in assisting its customers in performing their mission statements and goals while providing service to the public. The Director's office houses the CIO function, GIS Coordination, Computer Based Training, Planning and Analysis, Research and Development, IT Budgeting, IT Procurement, and special projects as assigned by Executive Management.

The Director of the Bureau of Information Technology serves the department in the role of CIO. The CIO's function is to provide technology vision and leadership for developing and implementing IT initiatives that create and maintain leadership for the DCNR enterprise in a constantly changing and intensely competitive work environment. This involves coordination with other agencies, the Commonwealth's CIO, and calls for the practical implementation of enterprise projects and objectives. The CIO is also responsible for IT Policy and aligning IT strategy with DCNR program and business strategies. This includes duties such as identification of business process improvements, IT simplification, identifying e-commerce revenue generation, and facilitating more effective management decision-making through knowledge management initiatives.
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Coordination

This area is tasked with providing coordination on a departmental level GIS functions, including coordinating training opportunities, encouraging communication throughout program areas, chairing monthly user-group forums, and identifying GIS-related needs throughout the department. The Enterprise GIS (E-GIS) project is underway, which will allow DCNR Executive Management, Managers, and all employees the ability to manage and promote the responsible use of natural and geologic resources from one centralized application.

The division is responsible for the development of open-system computer applications in a client/server environment. They are also responsible for consulting, development and maintenance of open-system applications within DCNR. Other functions include providing plans, definitions, feasibility analysis, design specifications, programming, testing, documentation, and implementation consultation. This division works closely with DCNR Application Sponsors and end users to insure that the applications developed meet their business needs and objectives. Examples of the types of applications that need to be maintained and upgraded are the Parks Reservation and Revenue System (PRRS), Snowmobile ATV Licensing and Renewal, and PNDI.

The Webmaster and staff are responsible for all Internet and Intranet activity. The division also has a community relation's function that involves working closely with the press office regarding web page content. Web staff also oversees all e-Commerce projects, creating new e-Commerce opportunities and electronic links to DCNR partners. This division works closely with the DCNR Web Coordinators and Web Technicians to insure that DCNR has a unified World Wide Web presence. Additionally, staff ensures all Commonwealth guidelines are followed.

This division handles all technical support and troubleshooting for DCNR staff via an internal Help Desk function. In addition to handling technical requests, this division is the front line in meeting customer needs. They are responsible for troubleshooting problems and the possible referral to other divisions for resolution, as well as computer equipment installation and inventory. Additionally, this division has the responsibility of maintaining the DCNR LAN/WAN presence. These duties include resolving connectivity issues, configuration, monitoring, and implementation of the technologies necessary to provide connectivity to DCNR staff and partners.

This division serves as the DCNR project management office and is responsible or providing resources, training, oversight and coordination on enterprise-wide technology projects. Further areas of responsibility include research, analysis, consulting, coordination and specifications development for technology-related contracts, in addition to providing monitoring and maintenance services for contracts that are in process or executed. Staff works closely with Purchasing, IT project managers and fiscal technicians.
