Montour and Panhandle Trails

Pack up the kids and a train whistle and pretend what it would be like to be the engineer of a 50-car coal train rumbling across the 971’ McDonald Trestle. The trains and tracks are gone but the beautiful view of the valley below remains. McDonald is the crossroad of two major rails-to-trails, the Montour and Panhandle Trails. The Montour Trail will one day extend from Coraopolis to Clairton and currently has over 40 miles of the trail completed. The Panhandle Trail, a more recently developed trail, has six miles completed and one day will connect Carnegie, Pa. to Weirton, West Va. At this site, just a small section of the Panhandle Trail is finished. Try walking along the Montour Trail, which crosses above parking area, on the spectacular train trestle. The trail is paved with a smooth surface of crushed limestone, which makes it ideal for all forms of non-motorized use: bicycling, walking, running, cross-country skiing and nature appreciation. * Once printed, the sheet of paper is designed to be folded twice.
(Therefore, the upper left-hand quarter will appear "upside down" on your screen.)

  • With printed side facing up, fold sheet "long-ways" (along the map) so that the printing faces "out" on both sides (and resulting in a sheet about 4.25"x11")
  • Fold in half again, so that the large photo faces "out" (the finished product should now be about 4.25"x5.5")
