"A Matter Of Going On A Diet" Part 2: Simple Steps To help Reduce Global Warming

Bob Hill, DCNR's Biodiversity Coordinator

To some folks, the expression "diet" is a dirty word, but in this case, a "diet" can lead to a cleaner environment. Last month we briefly explored the causes of climate change, and the effects it has. Now, let's look at some simple solutions that can alter the course of global warming. It is believed that carbon dioxide is a major contributor to the greenhouse effect. Each year, our activities result in the release of 40,000 lbs. of CO2 per person--that's a lot of "weight!" Using energy more efficiently reduces the demand for fossil fuels, which translates into lower gas emissions. If we reduced energy consumption in the U.S. enough to lower greenhouse gas emissions by only two percent, in 10 years we will "lose" about 7,000 lbs. of CO2 released per person. That's a diet that we can all bear to go on!

If you... You will "lose"
...Adjust your thermostat lower in winter and higher in summer... ...500 lbs. per year for each 2-degree adjustment.
...Wash clothes in cold water... ...up to 500 lbs. per year for two loads/week.
...Caulk and weather-strip around windows... ...up to 1,000 lbs. per year.
...Buy a car that gets good gas mileage... ...about 2,500 lbs. per year if the new one achieves 10 mpg more than your old one.
...Buy minimally packaged goods and recycle... ...1,000 lbs. per year if you cut your garbage by 25 percent.
...Plant trees next to your home... ...about 5,000 lbs. per year.
...Be informed about environmental issues and keep track of your elected officials' voting records... ...Billions of pounds/year as we change our lifestyles!

Numerous web sites offer tips on how you can help further. The following have been used for this article: the Committee for the National Institute for the Environment and the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. Happy "weight" loss!
