Pa. Urban Forestry Council receives national recognition

The Pennsylvania Urban and Community Forestry Council recently received the 1997 Chief's Volunteers Program National Award for its contributions to the U.S. Forest Service and communities across Pennsylvania.

Formed in the early 1990s as an advisory group to the state forester, the council shortly expanded its role to a nonprofit organization that accepted members who were interested in supporting urban forestry efforts in Pennsylvania. The council started raising funds to support a grant program that helps communities with tree plantings and tree care programs. The council also publishes a magazine and formed a partnership with the Penn State Extension Service to deliver technical assistance. The council continues to work together with DCNR and the state forester.

"It is impossible to measure or overestimate the importance, usefulness and value of the volunteer work accomplished and the public service provided by volunteers. In light of existing budget constraints under which we operate, your personal contribution has immeasurable benefits to this agency," said Mike Dombeck, chief of the Forest Service in the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

DCNR Secretary John Oliver and State Forester James Grace attended the awards ceremony, held May 20 at the quarterly meeting of the council.
