Symposium spells out successes

They came from environmental organizations, planning commissions, state agencies, mining companies, businesses and universities, all to learn more about the acid mine drainage treatment successes taking place at Jennings Environmental Education Center and in the watershed near the Butler County state park.

The setting was the 6th Annual Slippery Rock Watershed Coalition symposium, an annual forum to provide an opportunity for community groups and students from local educational institutions to present their activities and findings on acid mine drainage treatment techniques to their peers, the public and environmental professionals. Here, the attendees discussed the development of new technology in treating acid mine drainage and documented the successes of completed projects.

The passive treatment systems set up at Jennings have been discussed internationally among scientists involved in these processes and are thought to be the largest demonstration of passive treatment technology in the country. The Slippery Rock Coalition also has been honored for pulling together government, coal companies, schools and universities, businesses, and organizations for the successful treatment of acid mine drainage problems in the watershed.

The April 6 symposium featured panel discussions, presentations and a field tour of two of the treatment sites.
