Pennsylvania Heritage Tourism Report The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources administers the Pennsylvania Heritage
Parks Program in partnership with the State Heritage Park Interagency Task Force consisting of
other state agencies that have a role in heritage development. The program is catalyst for true
regional planning focused primarily on the protection, development and promotion of
Pennsylvania's industrial heritage.
Today, there are nine officially designated Heritage Regions in Pennsylvania. Information about these Regions and the Pennsylvania Heritage Parks Program is available on the DCNR web site. The study that you are about to access was commissioned by DCNR in partnership with the Department of Community and Economic Development, Pennsylvania Heritage Museum Commission, Preservation PA and the Federation of Museums and Historical Organizations. The purpose was to gather research information applicable to developing and refining marketing strategies to enhance the economic impact of heritage tourism and to gain information on traveler for perception and interest in Pennsylvania's Heritage Regions. The study was conducted by D. K. Shifflet & Associates of McLean, Virginia. A companion study of outdoor recreation , released in March of this year, was also undertaken by the contractor. Both projects were funded by the R. K. Mellon Foundation and the U.S. Forest Service Northeastern area economic action program.
