Dallas A. Kessler worked at Blue Hole. The number 344 appears on a picture of the camp. He did stone work at a spring. Others did stone work along the roadways, bridge, and lined the stream behind the camp. He also cut brush and trees. Once when clearing brush, he spotted a particularly nice "Bird's Eye Maple" tree. He insisted that the supervisor should know about such a special tree. It was about 5 feet across at the diameter. The superintendent did come see the tree and complimented my dad for identifying it. They took special care to cut the largest log they could. It took two tractors to pull it to the roadway. Dallas A. Kessler remembers smashing his second finger on the right hand while doing stone work. The camp doctor wanted to remove the finger advising that it was too badly damaged. My dad insisted on saving it. He said, "I need that finger!" It healed, and he used that hand for carpentry and plumbing work till retirement. At 87, the finger is a little bent and stiff, but still works! Dallas A. Kessler remembers boxing matches in the recreation hall. He was 5 foot, 6 inches tall and was in the light weight class. After "cleaning up" on a couple of them, he was matched with young men who were in the next weight class. Interestingly he has no memories of how he faired with the big boys! Dad has about 6 pictures. I plan to have them scanned and e-mailed to you soon.06/28/2004
