CBM Production in Thousand Cubic Feet (Mcf) for 1988-2008
The most recent estimate extracted from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Bureau of Oil and Gas Management shows that there are about 1,200 CBM wells in various stages of completion and commercial production in southwestern Pennsylvania. This number may change as more information becomes available. These wells are located in Allegheny, Armstrong, Cambria, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties. Until about 1993, the amount of CBM produced was almost negligible. While production levels varied during the next six years, 1999 exhibited a marked increase to about 770,000 thousand cubic feet (Mcf) and in 2008 reported production peaked at 11.6 billion cubic feet (Bcf). This is equivalent to heating about 168,000 households per year.
