Pennsylvania Coalbed Methane Wells Database
Open-File Report OFOG 11–01.0
Introduction
The Pennsylvania Coalbed Methane Wells Database contains information on wells associated with coalbed methane (CBM) in the southwestern counties of Allegheny, Armstrong, Cambria, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Washington, and Westmoreland. It complements Open-File Report OF 00–01 (the Microsoft Excel 97 spreadsheet) by displaying data in a new format, Microsoft Access.
The first phase of this database contains successful and unsuccessful accounts of CBM exploration and production, including early serendipitous encounters with CBM in the commonwealth, from well completions mainly between 1938 and 1998. It also provides annual production data from 1988 through 2009.
The data was initially based on paper files from our Pittsburgh office, the Wells Information System (WIS), the Pennsylvania Internet Record Imaging System (PA*IRIS), North American CBM Forums, literature (includes historical gas contents and reference to coal analyses), and personal communication with CBM operators when available.
The new Access database contains 15 information tables on various geologic and geographic data and 12 relational lookup tables. The lookup tables include explanations of the following codes used throughout the database:

Future plans are to include periodic updates with new data. The version number will indicate the number of updates. Open-File Report OF 00–01 will not be updated.
