Map 61

Atlas of Preliminary Geologic Quadrangle Maps of Pennsylvania

The printed version of Map 61, compiled and edited by Thomas M. Berg and Christine M. Dodge, is out-of-print and is no longer available for purchase. However, all 623 quadrangle maps in the original printed edition are available here as scanned images. Additionally, the text of Map 61* is provided. The text includes:

  • Cover
  • Title page
  • Introduction
  • Map construction and reliability
  • References
  • Guide to layout of compilation maps

The original List of Quadrangles and Figure 2 (index maps) are modified for this web page.

The List of Quadrangles is provided to allow easy and rapid location of maps. Individual quadrangle maps are accessed from the appropriate alphabetical section list by clicking the map number. The List of Quadrangles is also augmented by citations of later geologic maps and information that were separately published after compilation of the preliminary geologic maps in Map 61. These citations provide newer information that may replace or augment the preliminary maps of Map 61. Please consult these references for the most recent geologic map information of your selected quadrangle. The reference citation for the original work is found in the Map 61 text.*

Index Maps replace Figure 2 of the printed edition. The index maps allow the user to click on a map name and to retrieve an individual map. Figure 2 showed the location and names of quadrangles included in Map 61.

The 252 quadrangle maps that were not published in the printed edition of Map 61 are NOT included here. In the List of Quadrangles and the interactive index maps, these quadrangle names do not have a link. Refer to the cited literature in the List of Quadrangles for published geologic maps of these quadrangles.

Scanning to produce a digital file size for reasonably quick transmission prohibits capturing all available topographic information provided in the original printed version of the Map 61 preliminary geologic maps. Thus, for some included maps, intermediate topographic contour lines are very faint or missing in the computer screen image and may be missing on the digitally printed map. Some maps in Map 61 contain an overall gray background that, when scanned, affected the digital image and resultant digitally printed map. However all digital files produce usable printed geologic maps. Some maps have obscured geologic symbols or contacts where topographic contours are very close or where extensive cultural symbols are present on the topographic map base. If you encounter a map herein with unreadable symbols or contacts, please contact us to resolve the problem.

Please note that "The maps are of variable reliability, and should be considered preliminary in nature, subject to revision when more detailed mapping is done."
