Open-File Report OFGG 11–01.0: Folds of Pennsylvania—GIS Data and Map

Open-File Report OFGG 11–01.0 consists of a GIS personal geodatabase and a 1:500,000-scale map showing fold axial traces and structural fronts in Pennsylvania. It also includes shapefiles produced from the dataset, an ArcMap document for viewing the data, a Microsoft Excel workbook containing references and information for named folds, and metadata. The geodatabase file was configured so that when it is opened in Microsoft Access it defaults to a form showing the information on named folds.

The data for this report were compiled sporadically from 1984 to 2007. Source materials included over 200 reports (most consisting of or including a structure or geologic map) published between 1875 and 1999, as well as a few unpublished maps.

In the initial phase of the project, fold axial traces from maps of varying scales were transferred to two 1:250,000-scale mylars (east and west halves of Pennsylvania) utilizing a Kargel reflecting projector. The folds drawn were dependent on scale—folds of outcrop scale and many folds less than 1 kilometer long were not included. The mylars were later scanned and georeferenced, and the linework was digitized into ArcInfo coverages. In the ensuing years, georeferenced scans of some of the source maps were used to modify and add to the digitized lines, and the coverages were updated to feature classes in an ArcGIS geodatabase. A more detailed explanation of the contents of the dataset and the history of its production can be found in the metadata file included in the download with the geodatabase.

This report has not undergone external peer review.
