Ransom 7.5-Minute Quadrangle

Location of Ransom 7.5-minute quadrangle in northeastern Pa.

Open-File Report OFSM–06–01.1: Surficial Geology of the Ransom 7.5-Minute Quadrangle, Lackawanna, Wyoming, and Luzerne Counties, Pennsylvania (2006; rev. 12/2006)

The open-file report includes text, data tables, and a geologic map. The supporting GIS datasets are provided as separate downloads. Information from this geologic dataset was gathered and interpreted as part of a cooperative Statemap project between the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Topographic and Geologic Survey (Middletown, Pa.), and Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.

The Ransom surficial geology map was slightly revised and re-released in December 2006 (version 1.1). The surficial geology contact lines and contours of total thickness of surficial deposits (isochors) were revised along the borders with the Factoryville, Noxen, and Center Moreland quadrangles due to the more recent mapping in these quadrangles.

“Open-file” reports are informal releases to allow quicker public access to geologic data. Open-file reports have been reviewed for conformity with the open-file publication guidelines of the Bureau of Topographic and Geologic Survey. They typically have not gone through a formal editorial review process. In terms of technical and geological content, the standards for preparation of texts for informal release should not vary in quality, accuracy, or precision from the standards applied to similar geologic texts destined for formal publication. Open-file reports also may be released when the information is expected to be updated frequently, or when a limited audience is expected. Open-file reports are compiled by Survey staff and/or outside cooperators.

This report has not undergone external peer review.
