Bathymetric Maps for Lakes in Pennsylvania State Parks

History

In 2005, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), Bureau of Topographic and Geologic Survey (aka Pennsylvania Geological Survey), began collecting bathymetric (water-depth) data for lakes in Pennsylvania state parks. The early efforts addressed engineering and environmental questions for DCNR’s Bureau of Facility Design and Construction, especially water-volume and silt-volume questions. The bathymetric maps prepared for these early projects focused on the issues at hand and were not suitable for general distribution. Park managers saw those maps and asked if the Pennsylvania Geological Survey could provide bathymetric maps to aid anglers and boaters visiting the parks. Subsequently, maps have been created for a number of lakes and released by the Survey as open-file miscellaneous investigations. In addition to water depths, these maps display fish-friendly structures, such as stumps or downed trees, that would be of interest to anglers. The maps also show amenities in the parks, such as boat ramps, concessions, and restrooms.

Availability

The Pennsylvania Geological Survey plans to continue collecting bathymetric data at several lakes each year. Lakes are selected from a prioritized list provided by resource managers in DCNR’s Bureau of State Parks. The lakes that have been mapped to date are as follows:

Map Compilation

PAMAP orthoimagery is used as the base for most of the maps. On top of the base, the water-depth contours, the park amenities relevant to boaters and anglers, and the locations of fishing structures and habitat improvements are added. The last of those elements is taken from online maps produced by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (http://fishandboat.com/lakeplans.htm). Finally, trees and other obstructions that were documented during data collection may also be shown.

Disclaimer

These bathymetric maps are not designed for navigation. They are designed to assist boaters and anglers. Lake depths may change due to drawdown, flooding, and siltation. Fallen trees and other debris may move. Please be aware of your surroundings at all times and follow all commonwealth fishing and boating rules.
