The Drake Well, drilled in Titusville in 1859, encouraged oil and gas exploration throughout western Pennsylvania and spawned the modern petroleum industry. Pennsylvania's Oil Heritage Region (highlighted in black) celebrates early accomplishments by Drake and others in this burgeoning industry.
